Comfortable, eco-friendly boutique lodge in the Sungai Kapur Virgin Jungle Reserve.

Opened in 2024, Utan Rainforest Lodge offers a different location to explore the jungles of Borneo. Set in a remote section of land with access to rivers, you'll be away from it all, waking to the sounds of gibbons, birds, and local wildlife. The region is home to civets, leopard cats, orangutans, proboscis monkeys, mouse deer, flying foxes, eagles, endangered Irawaddy dolphins, gibbons, sun bears, Borneo pygmy elephants, crocodiles, and too many birds to list - including the elusive helmeted hornbill.

Rooms have everything needed for a comfortable stay in the rainforest including air conditioning, ceiling fans, and spacious en suite bathrooms. Queen or a set of twin beds are available. There is no tv and wifi is only available in common areas. A dip pool offers a place to relax outdoors between safaris, hikes, and river rides.

With only 12 rooms, the team will try to tailor walks and wildlife viewing to guests' interests (best if you let us know in advance!). Avid birders may wish to spend more time at the Ground Cuckoo or Crested Fireback hides to look for endemic birds while others may prefer more time at the Mammal hide viewing footage of wildlife caught on the camera traps.

A number of environmentally-sustainable practices are in place including solar water heating and electric motors on river boats to minimise noise and pollution. Outboard engines are also in place but not used when wildlife is present. A portion of the lodge's profits are donated to the Sabah Forestry Department to support community and environmental initiatives in the area.

As in other rainforests of Borneo, weather will determine the schedule at Utan. A stay usually includes a mix of hikes, night safaris, and river cruises, one of which might end with fireflies as you glide through the mangroves. We recommend bringing leech socks, sturdy walking shoes, and quick-drying clothing as the jungle heat can be hot and you'll want protection from mosquitoes and leeches. Full board as well as transfers to and from Lahad Datu are included. Reaching the lodge takes between two and two and half hours along bumpy rainforest roads.
